Purpose: The Assistant Director of Health/PE, Athletics, and Driver's Education oversees and coordinates the school district’s Health and Physical Education standards, athletic programs, and driver’s education programming. This role ensures that all programs align with state and district guidelines, promotes healthy living among students, and supports the development of comprehensive physical education and athletic safety initiatives.
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Health and Physical Education, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in teaching, coaching, and program coordination within a school setting.
- 3-5 years of experience as a school Athletic Director.
- Strong knowledge of state and district health and physical education standards.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage with staff, students, and the public.
- Demonstrated leadership and ethical conduct in athletic and educational environments.
- Knowledge of current trends and developments in health, PE, and athletic administration.
- Experience in organizing, supervising, and managing athletic programs.
Certification and Licensure Requirements:
- Valid NC Certification in Physical Education, Health, or a related area.
- Valid NC driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Athletics, Administration, or a related field.
- Previous experience as a District Athletic Coordinator or equivalent in a public school system.
- Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA).
Key Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Development & Implementation:
Develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive Health and Physical Education (PE) curriculum that adheres to state and district standards, regulations, and guidelines. Ensure the curriculum promotes physical wellness, safety, and healthy lifestyles for students across all grade levels.
- Program Compliance & Safety:
Oversee the safe execution of Health, PE, athletic, and driver’s education programs, ensuring alignment with state and local board policies and NCHSAA (North Carolina High School Athletic Association) rules and procedures. Ensure that all activities meet legal and safety requirements.
- Professional Development & Support:
Provide ongoing professional development and support for Health and PE teachers, athletic coaches, athletic trainers, athletic directors, and driver’s education instructors. Ensure that all staff members are equipped with the latest tools, resources, and knowledge to maintain high standards of instruction and safety.
- Instructional Resources & Program Enhancement:
Evaluate and recommend instructional resources, tools, and teaching strategies to enhance the district’s health and physical education programs. Work to improve the quality of instruction by staying current with trends and advancements in health and physical education.
- Athletic Program Oversight:
Define and manage the athletic programs and activities at the secondary school level. Collaborate with athletic directors, coaches, and school principals to ensure that programs are implemented effectively and aligned with the district’s educational goals.
- Best Practices in Program Implementation:
Work closely with school athletic directors and principals to establish and promote best practices for implementing health, PE, and athletic programs. Ensure each school follows district guidelines while adapting programs to meet specific needs.
- Facility Scheduling & Maintenance:
Coordinate the scheduling, use, and maintenance of school facilities for athletic events and physical education activities. Ensure facilities are safely maintained and appropriately utilized for school and district programs.
- Staffing Support:
Assist school principals in hiring key positions, including athletic directors, coaches, driver’s education instructors, and other relevant staff members. Ensure that all staff are qualified and aligned with the district’s physical education and athletics goals.
- Budget Management:
Assisted in developing and managing budgets related to health and PE programs, athletics, and driver’s education. Ensure proper allocation of funds for resources, staff, and facilities to support the efficient operation of these programs.
- Data Collection & Program Evaluation:
Collect and analyze data to assess the effectiveness of health, PE, athletic, and driver’s education programs. Based on data-driven insights, provide reports and recommendations to district leadership to guide program improvement and ensure alignment with district goals.
- Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Employees in this position must work in indoor and outdoor environments and come into direct contact with OCS staff, students, and the public.
