Position Title: Volunteer Coach for Athletic Programs
Position Overview: The Volunteer Coach will support the Head Coach in mentoring and training student-athletes aged 11-18, emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth. The role requires adherence to school policies and active involvement in all team management and development aspects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement, interpret, and consistently enforce school system, state, and conference regulations.
- Address and refer grievances through the proper channels.
- Attend all required public, staff, and departmental meetings.
- Maintain team discipline and promote morale and cooperation within the school sports program.
- Assist the Head Coach with scheduling, tournament transportation, and special events.
- Prepare facilities and ensure adherence to scheduled practice and event times.
- Collaborate with school staff to maintain practice and event spaces.
- Safeguard and maintain assigned equipment and practice sites.
- Teach and enforce training rules and sport-specific regulations to all athletes.
- Attend all practices and games, providing guidance and supervision.
- Ensure participant safety during travel for games and events.
- Assist with directing student managers and team statisticians.
- Support the Head Coach in disciplinary matters and communicate with parents as needed.
- Manage and account for team equipment and assist with inventory and collection of equipment fees.
- Issue and store equipment; maintain and submit annual inventory and records.
- Recommend budgetary needs for the program to the Head Coach.
- Monitor and control access to equipment rooms and coaching offices.
- Ensure locker rooms are clean before and after practices and games.
- Share responsibility for maintaining sports facilities and fields.
- Ensure proper care and maintenance of sports equipment.
- Secure facilities by locking doors, turning off lights, and closing windows when custodians are unavailable.
- Promote respect for teammates, equipment, and school property.
- Support the Head Coach with instructional duties, including teaching rule changes and sports fundamentals.
- Maintain and report team statistics and lettering requirements as requested by the Head Coach.
- Operate within the framework and philosophy set by the Head Coach.
- Attend staff meetings and carry out scouting assignments as directed by the Head Coach.
- Arrive early to assist with preparation for practices and contests, and stay after to address player needs or participate in staff discussions.
- Contribute to the planning and executing of in-season and off-season conditioning and weight training programs.
- Seek professional growth by attending clinics and utilizing resources provided by the Head Coach.
- Attend games of other teams in the program when possible.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
Qualifications:
- Minimum age of 18, high school graduate or GED.
- Complete the application process and pass a national background check.
- Attend required coaching meetings and training.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm, patience, strong organizational skills, and reliability.
- Prioritize athlete development over a win-at-all-costs mindset.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Volunteer coaches may work in various environments, including outdoor fields and adverse weather conditions.
- Coaches are expected to conduct themselves professionally, consistent with the expectations of paid staff.
