TITLE:     Long-Term Substitute Teacher Job Description

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

SALARY:             Certified substitutes:  $200.00 per day, 

                           Non-certified substitutes:  $150.00 per day, 

 

BENEFITS: Temporary Position, No Benefits

 

REPORTS TO: The School Principal or Designee 

 

DEFINITION: The long-term substitute teacher serves in the long-term absence of the regular classroom teacher.  Long-term absences are defined as more than 3 weeks AND duties warrant those of a classroom teacher. Long-term substitutes take on all duties of the teacher of leave as appropriate. 

 

JOB GOAL: In the absence of the regular classroom teacher help students to 

learn the subject matter and/or skills that are required for scheduled lessons and provide meaningful instruction for assigned classrooms.  To provide each student with the help, counsel, and learning experience he needs to make progress toward the educational goals established.   To create a flexible instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to live a rewarding life in an ever-changing world. 

                        

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Teachers' lesson plans and assignments if needed.  Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  2. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  3. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  4. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals.    
  5. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media.      
  6. Instruct pupils in a classroom, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
  7. Collaborates with colleagues to promote an optimal learning environment for pupils.
  8. Reports to the school office at the beginning of the school day to pick up the required materials/schedule of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials and get your timesheets signed.  Follows sign-out procedures as prescribed by the principal.
  9. Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.
  10. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  11. Guides the learning process toward achieving curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned.
  12. Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.
  13. Maintains a neat and orderly classroom.  Straightens chairs, tables, clears chalkboards, etc.
  14. Takes attendance by school procedures.
  15. Indicate to students at the beginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in the class.    
  16. Ensures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom.
  17. May perform duties usually required of absent teachers such as lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, etc.
  18. Knows emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned.
  19. Knows procedures for referring students who have disciplinary problems.
  20. Performs other related duties as directed by the principal.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Daily up to a Ten-month year.  

 

NOTE: Complaints made by a school principal about a substitute teacher may result in the removal of the substitute from the Substitute List.

Work is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments and come into direct contact with OCS staff, students, and the public.
