Position Purpose:

ESL teachers instruct students whose first language is not English. The goal is to teach the NC English Language Development Standard Course of Study. ESL teachers instruct Multilingual Learners to read, speak, listen, and write English, so they can achieve grade-level proficiency in all academic areas. ESL teachers must be highly knowledgeable in the content and structure of the English language as well as the methodology for teaching English to non-native speakers.

Preferred Qualifications:

ML Teacher Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teaches a full load of classes just like the mainstream teacher. He/she may have classes that are a combination of pull-out and co-teaching.
  2. Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.
  3. Collaborates with teachers to check student progress, teach the NC ELD SCOS as well as help student/mainstream teachers with strategies for building academic language in the content areas. 
  4. Administers standardized test administrations in accordance with all applicable Code of Ethics, Testing Code of Ethics, NCDPI, and/or national standards and regulations.  This includes WIDA Screener (to determine initial ML placement) and ACCESS for ELLs (annual English Language Proficiency assessment).
  5. Fulfills the role of a cultural broker between: 
    1.  Mainstream teacher- ML student 
    2.  Mainstream teacher- Parent/Guardian
    3. Administrator – ML student
    4. Administrator - Parent/Guardian
    5. School personnel – ML student 
    6. School personnel- Parent/Guardian
    7. EC Team – ML student
    8. EC team - Parent/Guardian 
  6. Provide other colleagues with support in best practices of serving Multilingual Learners via coaching, staff-wide professional development, co-teaching, modeling, resource support, etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force. Substantial amount of time spent standing and/or walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments and come into direct contact with OCS staff, students, and the public.
