GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor and guidance of the Building Principal, the Head Custodian coordinates and performs environmental service tasks, cleaning and maintenance of school buildings, mechanical repairs, support services for day and evening school activities, boiler observation and evening security for Elementary Schools in the Northfield School District. This position assists in providing a safe, clean learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Maintains daily work schedule of direct reports for routine cleaning.
- Assigns additional tasks according to school activities.
- Schedules weekend overtime according to work load.
- Check school grounds inside and out daily
- Prepare school for special events
- Push down hallways and sweep, mop, vacuum, run buffers and/or scrubbers
- Respond to all calls from the front office for clean-up assistance
- Ensures that sidewalks and entry ways are cleared of snow and ice.
- Set-up for after school sports activities
- Check on supply inventory, place orders and put in work requests
- Serve as on-call contact in case of after hours emergency
- Perform additional duties as directed by the Principal or Assistant Principal
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Raises and lowers flags at start and end of workday.
- Performs minor maintenance on appliances, as abilities allow.
- May open and secure buildings at start and end of workday, respectively; may turn on and off lights at start and end of day, respectively, and adjust heating or air conditioning, as appropriate.
- May arrange furniture for meetings or other events. Performs related work as required.
- Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
- General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work.
- Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials.
- Ability to follow instructions.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Graduation from high school
- Minimum of five (5) years custodial experience
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver’s license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles
WORKING CONDITIONS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force. Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments, and come into direct contact with OCS staff, students and the public.
