POSITION TITLE: Custodial Substitute
SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT: Elementary, Middle, and High school
SALARY: Classified Salary Grade 55 + applicable local supplement
FLSA Status: Non-exempt, temporary part-time position
REPORTS TO: Head Custodian, Principal, Custodial Foreman
WORK WEEK SCHEDULE: As needed, Monday-Friday, some weekend, hours as determined by Custodial Foreman
Position Purpose
Under the direction of the Head Custodian and the guidance of the school principal, the custodial substitute will assist in maintaining the cleanliness and daily operations related to custodial tasks. These tasks will enable the school's daily operations to provide students, faculty, and staff with a clean and safe learning environment. A custodial substitute is an on-call, as-needed assignment without guaranteed daily employment or hours.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assist the custodian/ head custodian in completing the daily duties of school custodial operations.
- Answer radio calls from front office staff, administrators, and custodians.
- Check student and staff restrooms regularly for cleanliness and ensure properly stocked supplies for students, staff, and faculty.
- Assist the custodial staff with the execution of breakfast and lunch functions and responsibilities, including sweeping, disinfecting table tops, mopping, trash removal, and dusting.
- Assist in setup needed for events and or district meetings.
- Check school grounds inside and out daily.
- Push down hallways, sweep, mop, vacuum, dust air supplies, and return. Disinfect high-touch areas, clean windows and mirrors, and unlock classrooms (as requested by official staff).
- Assist in unloading and stocking deliveries to supply rooms.
- Clean restroom toilets, urinals, floors, and sinks as needed.
- Clean spills and bodily fluids.
- Assist custodial team in completing minor maintenance on appliances as abilities allow.
- It may be required to open or close buildings.
- Raise or lower flags as needed.
- Be available outside of regular business hours in inclement weather or other emergencies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, leaf blowers, carpet shampooers, brooms, and mops.
- Needs to possess a working knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing practices.
- Should be able to operate floor scrubbers safely and responsibly with basic instructions.
- Must be able to change light bulbs when needed.
- Must be able to modify and change ceiling tiles with instruction.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
- The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and the school community.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- High School Diploma
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANThe work
- Work is considered medium physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force. It involves significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. The worker must be physically present to do the work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Employees in this position must work in indoor and outdoor environments and come into contact with OCS staff, students, and the public.
